FAQ — Macedon Ranges

Did the Picnic at Hanging Rock story really happen?

No — Joan Lindsay's 1967 novel was fiction, though she was deliberately ambiguous in interviews. There is no historical disappearance. The atmosphere of the rock, however, is very real.

Is the Summit Walk hard?

It's 700m up steep paths and steps, gaining 105m. Easy for active walkers, doable for fit older people, not suitable for prams or wheelchairs. There's a flat lower-rim walk if you can't do the summit.

Can we substitute more wineries?

Yes — Bindi, Granite Hills, and Curly Flat are world-class Macedon Pinot houses. We can swap Trentham Falls or the Memorial Cross for two more cellar doors.

Do horse races still run at Hanging Rock?

Yes — twice yearly (Australia Day and New Year's Day). On race days the Reserve is closed to general visitors; we'll reroute or reschedule.
